I decided to pursue my own hunch from last week, after analyzing everyone's comments here.

Starting Saturday morning, I disassembled the clutch, inserted the spring bellows between the clutch slave and the release bearing and then reassembled everything.

I did one reverse-bleed round with the Motive pressure bleeder. A single ~4mm bubble wobbled up from the clutch master into the reservoir. I tightened the bleed nipple and the clutch pedal felt pretty good immediately after the bleed. I didn't do the 20-40 pumps that I had been doing earlier last week.

Signs were good (like last week) in the first round of checking the feel in the driveway. But then after a five minute neighborhood drive, SUCCESS!

The clutch shifts cleanly through all forward gears as well as reverse AND it maintains operability through and after the drive. I couldn't believe it so I took the car out on the freeway and returned home with no signs of any soft clutch pedal. The problem seems gone.

I will be thinking about how that bellows/spring could make this critical difference. I briefly compared the old slave cylinder with the new one. There are some differences in measurements between the two but I didn't study/investigate all of them, such as the depth of the piston cavity. I'm wondering if that spring helps accommodate any slight changes in dimensions between the older and newer slave cylinders.

I'm reluctant to say this is something everyone should observe when doing clutch jobs. But in my case, with all this new stuff (all from eEuroparts), that spring bellows was NOT optional. It was required.

Thanks again for everyone's help and comments, it is a great help having access to so much experience on this forum.
