RayF --- got the shims today! I haven't opened the treasure and will wait until I get to the shop were the heads are. Thanks so much!
So, another thought on the no start is if the car is a manual, I've push started them when the ignition switch tumbler failed if the dash lights would come on.
Also, there is the test socket under the fuse box panel cover. Connecting two of those female connectors will engage the starter so you don't have to jump wires to the starter. I don't have the clocking map to tell you which are the two, and I personally wouldn't experiment. You need a stout wire though as it's carrying some current. It wouldn't matter to the car if it was an automatic or a 5 speed, but the point would be that is a stopgap measure to get it running to transport it to the shop.
