And to follow RayF's point of view on the safety neutral switch -- that is very possible if it is an automatic. I can also say that I've looked at the receipts from cars I bought that had multiple safety switches replaced at great cost. It made me wonder why on earth the switch was being replaced so often.....and what I found was that the connector that RayF mentioned on the solenoid from that safety switch was not fully engaged. So, lots of safety switches were diagnosed incorrectly by different shops, when all it was pointed to the lousy connection on the solenoid.
Also, check the big fat lead that goes to the alternator -- if it is loose the starter will be interrupted.
