I can't remember what part it was, but I recently ordered something for my 9-3SC and accidentally ordered the ProParts version... when I got it, I was mad at myself and then ordered the "Genuine Saab" version. They were identical, and I was a little upset. Although it makes sense from a business perspective, I'm really miffed that Orio would let ProParts OE for them. I guess the upside might be a long-term quality improvement - now that ARA/Uro is OE on some parts for some brands, their general quality has improved dramatically. Still...
FWIW, you should not need that check valve. Rail pressure is a function of the pump against the fuel pressure regulator, all the check valve does is improve starting by keeping the rail pressurized when the car is shut off. Newer fuel pumps have the check valve built-in (eg, Walbro 34x 255lph pumps), proving again Saab's engineering is ahead of its time. :)
My '90 SPG developed a weird problem many years ago which I tracked down to a *stuck* check valve in that elbow - it would not move far off its seat and fuel flow was restricted as a result. I removed the valve entirely, and the only side effect was an extra crank or two to start. When I did my 255lph swap into my '85 SPG, I also removed the check valve since the pump has one built in. It's really not necessary, but it sounds like yours may have been defective, perhaps like my '90's was.
