Another recent 900 to 9000 convert here Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Sat, 5 Nov 2011 18:50:18 In Reply to: '88 9K - Rescue, bottom9, Sat, 5 Nov 2011 17:56:37 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I'm a long-time 900 driver (25 years) and purchased a 9000 earlier this year. Needed a car with automatic gearbox due to arthritis. Since C900 slushboxes are not so hot I sought out and bought a 9000 and wound up with a '97 that has about 290,000 miles on the clock. (Like my 900 with similar mileage it still runs great.) So I'm still new at the 9000 game, but here's my two cents worth, I'm sure the more experienced guys can fill in more details:
Haynes seems to be the only generic shop manual available. There is no Bentley manual for the 9000, but you can use the C900 Bentley for the engine.
Maybe your clutch hydraulics just need to be bled? Don't know about the headliner and door panels.
As far as what you've gotten yourself into - lots of differences from the 900. The 9000 is much roomier and more comfortable. Same rugged engine, better transmissions are a plus. The transverse engine looks to be a bit more of a pain to work on, and you have to worry about stuff like serpentine belt pulleys and tensioner. Does the '88 have the direct ignition cassette? If so, those are costly and prone to failure, be sure to carry a spare, you can pick up a used one. (If you have the older distributor-type ignition so much the better.) The 9000 has a strut-type front suspension, so changing out shocks is more of a challenge. (Rear looks to be pretty much the same type beam axle as the 900.)
Yours would be a pre-airbag car so at least you get a glove compartment! Maybe pre-ABS too if you're lucky. Less stuff to go wrong. (BTW, you mentioned Ramblers, I still have some old AMCs kicking around!)
