I live in Connecticut, Saab's homeland in the States. My parents' two 9000s keep right on trucking, but I've moved on from mine a few years hence. Passed through a couple BMWs -- 89 535i 5 speed, 95 540i 6 speed -- and now have an 09 VW TDI wagon, bought new.
Had a 2000 9-5 wagon for awhile (sadly totalled), which was nice enough, but I am put off those models by the increasing cost of parts and of course the whole pre-2003 4-cylinder fiasco. I'd probably go for an Audi A6 wagon before a 9-5 these days, but prices for the Audis are on the high side for my taste. I'd heartily recommend avoiding any twin-turbo Audis, because if a turbo goes the engine must be removed to replace it.
BMWs are, in my opinion, about the closest thing to a mechanical rock in the early 2000s. Except for the cooling systems and automatic transmissions.
Lately I'm seeing 2003+ Volvo V70 wagons coming into view in the 5K-6K range locally, and these seem to have a fairly good reputation for reliability. You want to avoid 98-2002 models for transmission, AWD, and throttle control reasons, but apparently they're OK after that.
Tough dilemma. Another 9000 would be great for the right price, but they're almost never around anymore. I'm starting to think they're not so easy anymore, as fewer of them are around to pillage parts from, and Saab parts prices and availability are already becoming a problem.
