A good question, Diamond Dave. (And good discussion going on here about the different answers people have come up with.)
My wife and I moved overseas almost two years ago. We were planning to be gone for a couple of years and decided against keeping our cars. So, we sold her '00 Subaru Outback (who cares?) and my 9000 Aero (Cirrus over black, 5 spd, nearly mint, 137K miles, all records since new). It was hard to sell it.
We ended up back in the states sooner than expected, but we bought a 2004 9-5 wagon this past winter. It's no 9000 Aero, but it is a great car. Ours is an automatic, which would actually be reason enough for me to sell it if I found the right wagon with a manual in the future; As you note, the manuals are pretty hard to find in the Aero wagons after '04.
In a lot of ways, the 9-5 is a step up, but it lacks some of the character that we all love so much about older Saabs. That's just the way it's going to be.
As for BMWs an Audis, I would lean towards a 5-series or A6. I wouldn't want a big car like a 7 or A8 (although I agree with your assessment that they are beautiful cars). e39 M5? (If they only made a wagon...)
All the best with the search and the solution.
