As you've noted the manufacturers are not forthcoming about their formulations. One of the reasons is that the formulas change. You could read an old post about Mobil 1 0W40 that was true then but no longer relevant if Exxon/Mobil has "improved" the formula since 0W40 was introduced. I'm not saying that Mobil 1 0W40 has or hasn't been reformulated. I don't know. The Rotella synthetic I use was reformulated in 2009, not for the better IMHO but still acceptable for my B234 engine.
There is no need to be "stuck" on a brand. It is easy to go online and learn about oil and oil additive packages and to see VOAs (virgin oil analysis) of just about any oil on the market.
As for the viscosity range, I'm more interested in the "40" than in what comes before the "40" for a turbo application. I'm also interested in the HTHS (high temperature high shear viscosity) number. I haven't seen any hard evidence that a 0W40 will protect a cold engine better than a 5W40 or 10W40 with similar additive packages. I'll be happy to stand corrected if anyone knows where such a study can be found.
