The reasons for a lighter cold weight are cold starts, entirely, and you've got to take your climate into account for that decision. You've also got to take the length of your average trip (and how many cold starts) into account. The lighter the oil the sooner it becomes thin enough to filter. If you never get your oil up to temp, you *never filter it*.
That said, you're right that brand means very little, and HTHS is a key statistic. Also that rotella is a damn fine choice.
