Years ago when 10W-40 was first introduced, GM advised not to use it. The high percentage of additives reduced the amount of native oil, and apparently they had problems with it. A lot of oil has gone over the dam since, but oils with wide weight range surly must compromise in the basic oil stock and possibly lubricity. Stretching the viscosity range has to introduce a lot of compromises in oil properties. Zero weight oils are primarily for enhancing fuel economy, many newer cars heat the engine and transmission oil after start up to eke out a bit more MPG. Why does a new Camry call for 0W-20 synthetic and 10K changes, when the same version engine in a RAV4 uses common 5W-20 oil and 5K changes? Could it be the RAV4 towing capability is too tough for 0-20 oil?
