Thanks everyone.
It's been a while, but here's an update of what happened so far:
Even though I haven't actually found what caused it, this problem doesn't seem to appear at the moment.
Engine runs much better after new spark plugs and an oil change.
Old spark plugs were completely covered in dry black soot.
They also didn't seem to have had their gap adjusted.
They had no wear at all and a gap of about 1mm. Apart from the soot they looked brand new from the box. hmm.
(Don't know how old they are, I've only had this car for about two months)
I'll run the engine for a while and check the new plugs afterwards to see what they look like.
The oil was horrific, viscosity like water and smelled of petrol. Pitch black.
Unplugging the injectors revealed nothing (to me anyway)
Equal change in the running whichever injector was unplugged.
No change on unplugging the cold start injector even though the engine was cold.
Don't know if that means it's stuck open, stuck shut or temp sensor is faulty.
I have some suspicions about injector #2 though.
At one stage after starting and stopping the engine I removed the spark plugs and there was a continuous mist coming out of cylinder #2.
Smelled of petrol.
It only happened once though. Gave it a dose of injector cleaner in the tank. Don't know if that stuff actually works or not.
Noticed a fine crack in the exhaust manifold. Need to do something about that.
Car needs to go to a garage for the yearly registration check soon. I might get them to run some tests while it's there..
thanks everyone,
Peter
