I've been leery of the watercraft two stroke oils due to a perception that they are specifically formulated to degrade and 'evaporate' more quickly, reducing water pollution.
For that primary reason, and a couple of other reasons I've been using snowmobile oils that are specifically labelled (in small print) as "not approved" for watercraft, but are intended for watercooled, oil injected, two stroke engines.
Castrol "2T" mineral based oil is $27 /gal at the local auto parts chain.
XPS "E-TEC" synthetic is $170 at the local powersports outlet for a 2 1/2 gallon jug. At that $68/gallon cost, and about 40:1 consumption rate, the oil cost is $0.05 /mi added to the gasoline's $0.10 mi.
There's less start-up blue smoke, and less odor with the E-TEC, but the quantity of exhaust 'back-draft' oil spots on the Sonett's hatch is about equal to the "2T". I don't think I'll purchase any more of the E-TEC when it's consumed (about 3k miles at 30 mpg and a 40:1 injected rate).
