Read what you say but as my professors said "statistics lie". My personal experience - I prefer rear wheel drive. Yes, I have two SAAB's and owned 3 other FWD, 6 RWD - all sedans (four or more seats). These days, it is hard to find a RWD model in price range and options we enjoy (so I have SAAB's rather than a vanilla model from most makers). Every so often, I get chance to drive RWD rental and it feels so much better - steers better, responds better. FWD has compromises trying to do everything at once.
Some of the RWD models are very recent, made by GM & Ford in other countries. In one country, they are the main offering and they are great to drive. Admittedly, I grew up before FWD became common so may be biased. But still feel more comfortable in RWD, especially when pushing limits.
Your statistics are interesting - agree bad weather and RWD can be bad partners. And automakers have designed out the worst features of FWD - extreme understeer for one. I just wonder whether the danger of RWD suggested by your statistics is more a reflection of poor driver training.
