According to Edmunds the 9-3 has more headroom by about an inch, the 3 series has more width by about 2 inches and legroom is about the same but the big difference is the trunk. The BMW has 10.7 feet of cargo space and the 9-3 has 21.7. I'm not sure how the hatchback's trunk space was determined but I would bet it would have at least a 14 ft trunk if the car was a regular sedan. BMWs have very little trunk space and sacrificing trunk space is how they manage to get the size interior they do.
The two cars weigh the same and when you figure that the BMW probably has a drivetrain of 150-200 lbs more than the Saab, it means that Saab can put the extra weight into a steel safety cage.
