The Power4 has been around for awhile. IBM used four of them configured as something called multi-chip modules, MCM's, on their high-end mainframes. Each Power4 has two CPU's and are coupled via inter-chip communication drivers, enabling a network topology
with a minimal amount of substrate interconnect. However, what's so intriguing about this is that no longer will it be a clock-rate game against the old x86 architecture. A pentium pc has integer cpu capabilities that rivals mainframes, but its' i/o and memory bandwith is rather low for any real technical computing or for audio and graphic arts rendering. With the Power4 on board Apple, we're now in the Alpha (DEC) class - the Alpha still is to the microprocessor world what the trionic is to the turbocharged internal combustion world!
That is, we now have, integrated on one chip, the main memory controller, huge memory bandwidth, and huge i/o and inter-processor communication bandwidth. Imagine the speed one could render working with movie animations that can now be placed in memory on the chip, rather than having to communicate, relatively slowly, with the hard-drive? Apple fans have to be excited about this reunite with big blue. There's only one caveat - it'll take a while for all the developers to transition to 64 bits. I hear that Panther will make its' debut pretty soon, but there's still all the applications to go......it'll be interesting!
