Dell desktop computers are not that great. Dell servers are decently reliable, but overpriced. Dell, like any mass-market PC manufactuer likes to make inexpensive desktop computers and will cut corners to save a couple bucks. HSP modems are one example. Most of the consumer PC manufacturers use them, and people's internet experiences would be substantially faster and better if they spent $15 on a modem instead of $5. (Apple imac's have not that great modems too) Other items which are ultra-cheap and would be substantially better for $20 would be a keyboard. Apple has good keyboards and you pay for it. In the past few years though Apple has had horrid mice (pucks, tiny 1-button mice, etc..) that warranted an aftermarket mouse for all serious users. Most massmarket PCs come with mediocre monitors. If you use a computer all day, get the best you can afford. Apples tend to have good monitors, but they are usually sold seperately, so it's not a close price comparison factor.
A extremely powerful and reliable well built PC can be had. You either build it yourself, have a local shop build it to your specs, or get something like an alienware computer.
