What do you mean Stephen by «change interval had to be made longer to keep the sludge rate up»? My English is not perfect but I guess you are being cynical ?
In any case, I think long intervals are dangerous because they increase the risk of running your car with low oil level. I think it is safe to assume that TSN members are more cautious than average car owners, but it is easy to forget about oil when you leave the same oil in for very long periods. My dealer tech has told me horror stories where people wait for the oil light to turn on to bring there car in...too late.
To BobG: I had no oil change scheduled at 30 days on our 01 9-5 but I did not wait for the recommended 16 000 kilometres. If you read the manufacturers recommendations on the back page of the owner's manual-at least it was there in 2001, a lot of us drive in conditions that warrant shorter intervals (8000km or 5000 miles). Since I switched from the OEM semi synthetic to full synthetic Euro-spec Motul, I change at 10 000km instead of the recommended 16 000km. Even at 10 000km, I have to be careful because I need to add at least one litre of oil between changes.
Hope this helps a little
