It is too many people beleiving that car manufacturers do whatever they can to keep the car alive for as long as possible.
The bean counters at the plant only want the car to live long enough so that most warranties are over but still long enough so that the owner will buy a new one.
Another aspect in this scenario is the "green points" that they receive by making a car that doesn't pollute.
With pollution it's not only what comes out of the tail pipe but also how much waste oil and coolant and such the car produces over its expected life.
If they can show (on paper only) that the car never needs coolant/trans fluid changes and hardly any oil changes over the expected life of the car they receive lesser "green fees".
This is politics and paper wrangling at such high level that most of us would not understand it anyway, just like oil prices going up and down without a reasonable reason.
