OT: Gas Logs in Fireplace and Damper Stop.... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Tue, 18 Jan 2005 04:11:22 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
We had gas logs installed yesterday in our masonry fireplace and I have a question regarding the "Damper Stop". When we first investigated having logs installed I was surprised to learn that a small beam clamp would need to be installed on our fireplace damper to hold it partially open even when the logs were turned off. My concern was the energy loss this would cause. The Salesman said it was necessary to vent the pilot light fumes.
After completing the work yesterday the installer said the damper stop wasn't necessary and that he hadn't installed it. He left it with me for future use if I want it. His logic was that older model gas stoves used three pilot lights, two for burners and one for the oven, with no exterior venting. A single pilot light directly beneath a chimney with some natural leakage would obviusly not need it either.
I will be running a simple sniff test over the next few days to see if we detect odors from the pilot llight. On the surface the installers logic seems very plausible and I don't want to waste heat energy up a partially open chimney. I also don't want an unsafe installation. FYI - the installation instructions say to use the damper stop but don't have massive multiple safety warnings regarding it, they include multiple warnings about other issues though.
What have others with gas logs done regarding this damper stop?
