I've just got a gas log-lighter since I use real wood in the fireplace. I've got glass fireplace doors & my chimney damper is far from airtight. I believe it would be OK in my fireplace.

What's a 'simple sniff test'?? Something like a CO2 or CO detector? If you're just gonna smell the air frequently, that's not a good enough test.

Old gas stoves sorta went hand-in-hand with older houses which were not very airtight.
