basement smoke detector. I can easily move the smoke detector to the family room for an evening to see what happens. Good idea, I hadn't thought of using that.
House and fireplace are slightly over 25 years old, "Builder's Special" construction so not as air-tight as some newer homes.
Just as a warning to others with masonry fireplaces in tract homes, two houses have caught fire in my neighborhood within the past 3 years due to open mortar joints in the fireplace. Both homes were over 20 years old. Luckily the homes were saved with limited damage but it has served as a wake-up call for the entire neighborhood! Inspect & Repair, convert to gas after repair, or remove.
