odor, so sniff test doesn't work. You can use the sniff test for leaking gas but not for CO. When adjusted properly, gas burning applicances burn clean given enough oxygen supply and rarely give fumes.

For peace of mind and utmost safety, go get at least one CO detector. The detector has become very inexpensive, get a couple and follow instructions on how to mount. You may want the self-powered ones (if you are good at changing batteries) as they work even when electricity goes out.
