Are your son's interviewing skills on par with his academic accomplishments? I knew lots of very accomplished people in grad school who had never, ever interviewed in their lives when they started job hunting and missed out on good opportunities because of it. Same with the resume - my Chinese friends had resumes that were very inappropriate for American employers (they would add photos, mention their health status, family occupations, etc. All routine in China, not so much here!).
Having a good looking resume can be very important, especially when a top law firm is going to get hundreds of resumes and some poor HR rep has to sort through them. My wife used to work in HR and in order to cut down on the volume to make their job do-able simple filters were often applied: funny color paper, bad or funky fonts, address/email/phone not clearly listed, they'd all get junked.
