In MY opinion... they are bad news. There are two types of K&N filters you can get:
1. Open Air Filter: This option eliminates the whole stock airbox and the tube that runs from behind the front grill. There's just an open filter hanging down behind the bumper exposed to water and dirt if you don't get creative and make some sort of shield for it. Doing it this way you can hear the beautiful sounds of the turbo spooling up and the bypass valve sneezing. There's a slight performance boost, especially on the 9-5's with TD-04 turbos (Aeros and '04+ Arcs).
2. Drop-in Filter: This option just replaces the stock paper filter in the airbox with a K&N filter. There are no performance increases or changes in sound.
Sure, lots of people use K&N's for a long time and never have problems with their cars, but I don't think it's possible for the K&N's to filter the same amount of stuff out of the air as a stock paper filter can. Plus you've got the oil on them. They're probably okay out of the box when they're factory-oiled, but once you clean the thing, if you over-oil it your engine is going to pull in some oil and coat your MAF with it (not good), and if you under oil it, you're going to let all sorts of dirt through. The stock paper filters have lots of surface area and can supposedly handle 300 horsepower. For 15 bucks you can't go wrong. In my opinion, anyway. Sure, I'm sure lots of people will get on here after me and defend the K&N filter, which they're allowed to do, but I'm not putting one in my car.
