No offense meant, and I'm pretty enviro-oriented, but that logic seems a stretch. Doesn't mean you're wrong, and it's really whatever floats your boat. I change air filters every couple years, but after looking at them at the change, really think it can go much longer under normal conditions.
As a marketing guy I just look at K&N as a scam for anything other than very highly tweaked engines, but that's just me being cynical. Do what works for you and drive happy!
OTOH, I'm conflicted by the fact that I worry about the environment but do track days (at about 9 mpg) in my 9K, fly 65K miles a year, drive 80 mph and when I go to Germany I regularly run at 100+ mph.
