Have an 2001 9-5 Aero installed open air K/N May 2007 at 101,000 have 147,000 now, no splash sheild. I live in CT drive year round all sorts of mess. Have not had one issue. Techs that work on my car state I would have to have the entire front nose of the car submerged in standing water to cause a problem. At that point the open air fiter will be the least of my problems. Both techs I deal with, 1 has 96' 900 with open box inside engine bay other has 02 9-5 same setup as mine both no issues. my 2cents
P.S. getting about 2mpg better with it.
