Sometimes, in fact often, the decimal/metric system doesn't go far enough. It is great for computations but expresses measurements poorly to the human experience. There are many examples of the downright, practical nature of non-metric systems:
Temperature
F-scale gives roughly double the number of integer observations as C-scale. More convenient and precise.
Time
Where is the outcry for ditching the 24-hour day and replacing it with a 10-hour day? Or a 100-unit day? See... one is too little and the other too much.
Sharing Food
- If I offer to split my sandwich with a co-worker I don't say "would you like five-tenths", I just say "half."
- I can't say I have seen a pie or pizza cut 10 ways. Instead, the value is eight which is the result of a repeated halving process. Very efficient and understandable. Remember: human bodies are symmetrical and we are comfortable with two-state choices and it is very natural to double-down, split, subdivide etc. our choices further by a factor of 2. My goodness, even computers are binary!
Money
If U.S. is to "join the rest of the world" in decimalizing everything then I guess we have to get rid of the quarter, nickel, and the $5 and $20 bills. Why? What benefit is gained?
