You're blowing it out of proportion.
Just because a unit system is defined in terms of decimals doesn't mean you're not allowed to *group* things in quantities other than powers of ten. I have a 20-cm ruler in my desk at home, and a gym somewhere in Europe probably has 2kg or 5kg dumbbells. Beer over there is often sold in 330mL bottles or 500mL glasses.
You can divide your sandwich or pizza however you like because last I checked, those were not units of measure. If they were, you'd probably be pissed if the delivery guy brought you an undersized pie whose surface area measured only 0.9 pizzas.
Currency is a different case because its value fluctuates according to world economics, whereas a unit of measure should be an absolutely defined constant, but all the same it does help to use decimals to simplify calculations. Can you imagine using the old UK currency system before it was decimalized? See link below.
I'd actually love if we eliminated the penny (the coin itself, not the value of one cent) as some countries have done successfully with their own decimal currency systems. It costs more than it's worth to mint, after all...
