The reason not to buy a badge engineered car or suv such as a 9-7 is that you can get the exact same thing cheaper. Why buy a 9-7 when you can get a Trailblazer for less? Why buy the Mercury Tracer when you can get a Ford Taurus for less? Why spend more money just to get a fancier name on the hood? Platform re-use isn't the problem, it's laziness in platform re-use. Compare the 9-7 and Trailblazer to the Ford Focus/Mazda 3/Volvo S40 and V50. The Ford, Mazda, and Volvo all use the same basic platform, but they are also each unique cars with different appeal. The Chevy and Saab, if de-badged, are indistinguishable.
