Sorry you experienced this scare. Was this on your 9-3? I noticed you mentioned "beam" which I'm guessing refers to the torsion-beam rear axle?
I have a similar jack and find that jacking the rear of my 9-3 is much less convenient than the front. What I do is to place the jack *near* one of the factory jacking points, raise it, and then lower it onto a jack stand *at* one of the jacking points. In some cases, I might want to reposition the jack before using it to lower the car afterward, and obviously I'd need to if I'm raising both sides.
This is easy at the front, as there's a stamped "bump" on the body just behind the front mud flap that seems solid. At the rear, my chosen location is where the trailing-arm portion of the rear suspension bolts to the body. I use a hockey puck to avoid damaging the car, but I don't rely on it to distribute the weight. I'm avoiding 2x4s (except for supporting the transmission while changing a mount, for example) after splitting a couple scraps of pine.
The consensus is to NEVER place the jack anywhere on your rear axle assembly, as it's not meant to handle those loads and could be bent easily. Plus it does you no good if your suspension compresses as you're jacking! :-)
