All season means the tire is "adequate" for year round use, but is not really great at any one thing. Some people call them "no seasons."

"All season" is pretty loosely defined. All-season tires have "M & S" (mud and snow) molded into the sidewalls, meant to indicate it is usable in winter conditions. But this is not a performance metric; it's a measure of what's called the "block-to-void ratio." That's how much of the tread surface is blocks of rubber and how much is the spaces between them. Then there's the actual rubber compound which gets into material science on all types of tire. This makes a huge difference in tire performance. Most all seasons can manage moderate winter conditions in metro areas where the roads are cleared quickly. They don't do so well in more rural areas where the snow stays on the roads longer.

New all seasons will probably be fine the first winter unless you have to get through a lot of deep, unplowed snow. After a winter (depending on how much you drive, of course) they will be worn enough that you'll need to put on some snow tires.

AWD helps in winter, but not as much as having good tires, IMHO. It does nothing for braking but can help in cornering (one of the reasons WRC rally cars are AWD). And it's great going up slick surfaced hills. But it's TOO confidence inspiring, enabling people to go faster than they should. I've motored past enough stuck-in-the-snow AWD and 4WD vehicles to convince me for most situations a well-driven FWD car with 4 winter tires can do just as well 95% of the time.
