There isn't any indication in the video that the three sets of tests have the same initial vehicle speed, nor the long-term consistency of the tests through the day. As the snow/ice get crushed throughout the day, the results would reflect more of the test bed road's changing conditions than the tire differences; that's why ice rinks deliver more consistent test methodology. Nokian does not even represent the results as conducive to comparing the three Nokian tires among themselves. If Hakka 5 were indeed better than Hakka R in snow/ice even when running without studs, what in the world is the marketing position for Hakka R anyway? What are the patented microscopic pockets on the Hakka R for anyway? Is it a "performance" winter tire?
Adjectives like "deep" and "good" are nice, but numbers and measurement units were invented for a reason. How deep are the treads on a Hakka5 or Hakka4 when new? and when after 10k miles? Obviously both of us can get around on snow days just fine with our respective approaches; otherwise we wouldn't be feeling so strongly about our solutions. I actually do not wish for unploughed road at all. I know I can stop with my tires especially with the safety distances that I keep in front of me, but I'm not convinced that other drivers are properly equipped to match their exaggerated ambitions, and they might slam into my car because I stop too fast for them. Too many people out there think they can drive their cars in snow like maniacs just because they have AWD or snow tires. Cars take multiple times as much distance to stop on snow/ice, even with the best studded or studless tires (brand new), than on dry roads. I often find myself having to tap on my brakes then accelearate quickly in winter, just to give the tail-gater behind me some early warning preparing them for the emergency braking if ever necessary.
