Subarus do not brake as well as Saabs do even in summer. That's why I bought my first Saab instead of a Subaru. As for going forward, average snow tires provide about 25% more traction than average all-season tires (the emphasis being on average, all-seasons vary greatly, as do snow tires to a lesser degree) . . . AWD provides about 67% more traction than a FWD car with 60/40 weight distribution . . . that's before fancy torque distribution mechanism finds the the one wheel with traction and not considering uphill situations, both of which would give a far greater advantage to AWD.
