again, don't really worry about the competitors' tires in the test - I didn't even bother to try + figure out what they were. Comparisons are better made with independent 3rd party tests. The Hakka 5 clearly outperformed the R, though not by a whole lot. I would be more inclined to say, given there will be test uncertainties, that they are comparable, just like the R is comparable to the other "premium snow tire" (fwiw)... Sometimes intuition isn't right... no big deal...

I will say, the numbered Hakkas have fantastic performance in snow + slush. If I have to cross a deep trail of slush left by a plow on the freeway switching lanes, the car stays planted and the slush goes splat even at 60-70mph... pretty incredible. the deep grooves between tread blocks + the pattern works really well. I rarely shovel my driveway unless we get around 12" of snow... I wish the streets were plowed (and salted!!) less often... I have no more trouble getting around in snow storms than my friends in Subies with good snow tires. The balance + raw gut feel of a c900 with the right tires is worth a whole lot of AWD!

it's all good, we just have different interests + your tire choices are perfectly reasonable for your interests. wrt the speed rating, nobody should be driving up near the speed ratings anyway... all else equal, and depending on various factors, a V rated tire might be a little more stiff than an H, which has some attributes one can feel... any more than V on the Saabs is pretty silly imho, though I'm sure some do it...

just got a few more inches today... hope the plow doesn't go by!

cheers,

James...
