I had a long ranch house that had a large brick chimney in greatroom in the center of the house. The heavy chimney was not appropriately supported with a chimney and it had sun approx 1 have inch away from the ceiling.
Me and a guy i hired from a foundation place jacked it up and built a footer underneath. It was alarming hearing noises as we slowly jacked up the timber which was the main central support for the entire house. When I was under the house doing this I had this image of hardwood flooring splintering...But, no damage. We build a footer to provide the addl support needed and no issue.
I would look into hiring a foundation guy. Dont think it will be too expensive especially since, like me, you were only looking for improvement not perfection.
