that is a long standing point... Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Fri, 13 Apr 2012 08:42:24 In Reply to: Great point!, Noel, Fri, 13 Apr 2012 08:04:44 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
electric cars are not a new thing... been around 100 years... my understanding of it though was a problem of energy density - it was just too hard to get enough range + "go" compared to ICE, which therefore took off in the market... but as I understand it, even the old electric cars were reliable, more so than ice - they just didn't meet the consumer's need for power. Reliability is one of the reasons EV "convert" types cite for swapping out ICE with EV systems... of course part of it is the fun DIY activity. Having an EE/physics background, it mildly appeals to me, but the options available to the general public (never mind adding "at any sort of reasonable cost") are pretty darn limited technically still. I really liked the motor tech from PML Flightlink (now, HiPa drive? was used in Volvo Recharge), at least as a concept... addresses many technical hurdles + would be fun to play with, but not available to the public...
If you want energy density, maybe we need to go back to "the atomic age" haha... I think this one is a joke, but Ford had a moderately serious concept (clay model stage only I think)...
