One of my friends in high school had a 1963 Chevy Nova SS convertible that he fitted with a normal light switch (like the one in a wall box next to a door!) wrapped in electrical tape to bypass the failed starter switch: you turned it "ON" to engage the starter, then had to turn it "OFF" to release it - it hung floating in space under the dashboard! If the car is still around (quite doubtful, but now collectable), the switch is probably still working.
