OT: Inspect your plastic auto ramps regularly! Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Mon, 8 Apr 2013 16:12:34 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I received a pair of Rhino Ramps a decade ago, maybe longer, and used them regularly until about 3-1/2 years ago. That is when our youngest got laid off, re-enrolled in college to change his career, and left his much younger Rhino Ramps in our garage. Since his were easier to access in the garage I have used them exclusively for 3-1/2 years.
During my January oil change on the 9-5 I noticed a short crack in the front wall of his ramps. Following the recent oil and ATF change on our 9-3 I noticed the crack had grown. These ramps have only been used on smooth concrete poured in 2004, and very rarely on smooth asphalt in front of his former condo.
His 8000# capacity ramps are going in the trash on Wednesday and will be replaced by a new pair of 12,000# ramps. Tonight, when using my ramps for the first time in quite a while, I noticed my old ramps are 12,000# capacity and still crack free. I turned over one ramp of each pair and was shocked at the vast difference in reinforcing rib quantity, depth, and thickness for a 50% change in capacity.
Morals:
1) Inspect all ramps regularly, especially plastic ones.
2) 8,000# ramps are not durable enough for repeated use (6-8 times per year) even with small to mid-sized sedans. Buy the heavier rated units only!
