the are a few caveats. First, plain water will not remove and tar, dried insects or other road grime. If you wash the car often enough(once a week) and remove insect residues when relatively fresh, then lightly wiping with a soft cotton rag while running cool water(from a hose) over the surface is a great way to increase the life of the wax layer. For difficult spots you can use a detailing spray liquid or spot wash with a car formulated soap solution. One caution, I would not advise washing an extremely dirty and gritty car with plain water. Instead, I would use a soap solution that will help float away harmful grit. Good luck.
