I know that it might seem as easy to pass our driving tests as peeing into a lake, but I know somebody who failed the MA test a few years ago, after moving here from Europe. No, it's not that the test is more difficult, he did something really stupid like driving off with the parking brake still on, or something like that. Or maybe they just wanted to have somebody fail, so we couldn't say they just give out licences. The requirements vary from State to State, but I know that they are way too lax everywhere. In Europe you have to drive on a learner licence, usually with a number of restrictions like darkness exclusions, etc. and do a test on a real road in real traffic. If you pass your test in an automatic car, you will, in most countries, have to pass another test in a manual car before you can legally drive one. Personally, I don't understand all the mystique associated with manual gearboxes - in Europe everyone just drives them, including major cities which have traffic to equal any American city. At $5/gallon for gas, you can see why. With regard to the possibility of the percentage of US drivers who can drive a manual gearbox actually being lower than Subaru's survey indicated, I think this is definitely possible - 1) there is the amount of people who know they can't but say they can to look good, 2) there are all those people who THINK they can, but really cannot!
