Thankyou, Coolknight. Very seldom do people advertise their ignorance so openly.
The jist of your contention is that Europe is not serious about reducing CO emissions- totally untrue, there is not a grain of evidence to support this. Europe has consistently been a leader in reducing hydrocarbon emissions. The clean gasoline regulations that are just coming into effect now in the US are piggybacked off Euro regs that have been in place for some time. Euro standards for clean diesel fuels are also way ahead of the US- their diesel fuel has 90% reduction in sulfur content vs US diesel. Clean diesel is coming to the US, but like gasoline, it will be years behind EU standards. The sulfur is not only a contributor to acid rain, but it is responsible for poisoning cat converters.
The European approach of taxing emissions has been proven effective. You cannot legislate high mpg vehicles out of existence- witness the appearance the SUV as a "light truck" in the US. Not only are Euro operated gas and diesel vehicles fuel efficient by US standards, they are a decade ahead of the US in the use of low emission electric-gasoline hybrids. Why do you think the Japanese are ahead of Detroit in fuel efficient gasoline technology and electric-gasoline vehicles? Because of Euro demand! Besides, why should Europe eliminate gas guzzlers that are exported to the US? It's our business to regulate mpg in the US, not the EU's.
Europe is not the only supporter of Kyoto, as it happens. The US is behaving like a renegade in not ratifying the treaty. When there is only one major industrialized nation that does NOT support the treaty, you have look at what is driving the one opponent.
George Bush has only one agenda- to promote the US Oil and Gas industry. It is his objective to protect their (his) interests, the environment be damned, global harmony be damned. George W. has gone so far to publicly state that SUVs do not contribute to the high rate of gasoline consumption and gas prices in the US. Any takers on that theory?
