When someone is getting nearly 50mpg(us) with a diesel engine, the CO emissions are a fraction of even fuel efficient gassers.
The modern diesel engine is quite clean. They are even cleaner in europe where you can get high cetane low sulfer fuel. The high sulfer low cetane diesel fuels in the US are not much different from #2 heating oil.
Most of the long haul diesel trucks have been converted to computer controlled injectors. You do not see many trucks blowing smoke like they did years ago. With 50 cetane lower sulfer fuel the combustion is much cleaner, and the engines run smoother and with less noise.
If you could switch the trucking industry to gas, the pollution would be much worse. So then why do you assume that more diesel passenger cars would be bad thing?
