Transportation is 25% of the emissions problem.
At the same time, the true cost of burning
hydocarbons has never been reflected in the
price, taxes and all.
Further, alternate, cleaner means of propulsion have
never rec'd the subsidies that the hydrocarbon
industry has rec'd.
A Shell spokesperson put it this way: We are in
a transitional time of about 20 years. Alternative
means of propulsion will emerge while internal
combustion engines based on hydrocarbons will
remain, in the short term, the staple.
The consumer will be confused by the array of choices.
The Euros have a remarkable record of cutting CO2.
They also have far higher fuel costs. Kyoto wants
a 5% CO2 cut from the US, no matter how that is achieved.
I have seen articles where a few simple large-scale projects,
will achieve that so I don't really believe all the grief
about bringing down the US economy by signing Kyoto.
Change the light bulbs for Pete's sake.
Sequester the CO2 from hydrocarbon field operations and
stop gas flaring. Clean-burn the coal.
The technologies are there. Develop them.
The consumer will pay, one way or the other, if the consumer
uses energy in the quantities s/he's become used to using.
If the Euros want to export cars to the most
lucrative market in the world, they'll need to
comply with North America's CAFE standards.
There's talk in Congress of imposing standards on
SUVs.
Saab is ready for all of this. More ready than most.
No worries.
I don't see this as an us vs.them argment. I see
we're in this thing together.
Cheers; John A.
