The "crony-capitalism" practiced in Russia is hardly capitalism, just naked predation by an elite few as it had been but now in a different guise. The redeeming factor is that now the environment is slightly more condusive to the gradual emergence of an indepedent middle-class than it used to be under de jour totalitarianism. Frankly, I'm not too keen on any ideological "ism." Human freedom is about the right to make choices, the right not to be told what to do, what to eat, how much oxygen to breathe in, and how little CO2 to breathe out. No country is perfect, but the closer proximation to that ideal goal the better. Individual choices, whether it is made by a Canadian or an American, or by anyone else, deserves far more attention than decision by a self-selected group of "wisemen" because the "wisemen" are not accountable for their errors as they jet around the globe attending environmental conferences while putting more dents in the ozone layer. That's why population migration patterns (and desires) are a far more insghtful indicator of relative living conditions, and a far more desciplined judge of policy success and failures. For decades, the communist bloc regimes proclaimed themselves to be the paradises on earth, and peer-reviewed each other to bolster their own cases. The desire of the little people to migrate easily exposed those lies.
I'm not for bailing out airline, or steal companies, or sugar farmers; for their trouble, I think the candy makers in the US should more to Canada, if not Mexico, just to get free market sugar price, and get lower priced candy to every consumer. As to Jeffords, I hope he will block Bush's proposal, so that the US will not participate in the global CO2 nonsense at all. Until all the talking green heads put their fuel guzzling jets and giant V8/V12 limoes in permanent storage or better yet give up their persoal share of CO2 exhalation ration, don't even think about regulating my 2.3L turbo SAAB down to a 1.6L sewing machine (that's what the Kerry bill with 37 MPG mandate would do).
