....when these so-called "choices" are heavily
influenced by deep-pockets, tobacco lobby-type
misinformers like King Coal and Exxon-Mobil hires to
send out to the countryside with their ever-so-convincing
ads and 'science'. What choice does the little guy really have
against that institutional nonsense?
Japan has called the Bush Kyoto-subversion plan
plain dishonest, just like the specious Beltway
lobbyists and spinners who continue to muddy clean
choice waters.
Bush, meanwhile, has the advantage not only of pumps-
in-place convenience of big oil, but the interia and
'patriotism' of a populous who will basically go wherever
he leads them. If he says going clean is too costly, then
that is accepted as fact, even though there are other opinons
out there who see a huge economic boom in moving fast on
technologies and retooling, just like the industrial revolution.
Having said that, it appears that Bush is moving to make the
choices available to the consumer made on a more level playing
field, with subsidies to (perhaps) match those big oil already
has and has had for some time.
I would not sell Russia too short. Corporate transparency has
come a long way; bond ratings are way up; WTO membership is
imminent; Russia's little stock market outperformed most
last year, and Anders Aslund's take on the rate of change in
Russia positively glows with optimism. The trajectory is fast-
forward and up.
Russia is moving to become the world's largest producer of oil
again and Putin has invited the US to buy Russian oil and to add
to the ever-growing list of mega-projects slated for completion, from
Exxon-Mobil and Shell's Sakhalin, to opening up Kazakhstan's and Kyrgyzstan's southerly routes with a Unocal pipeline through Afghanistan
(Pipelineistan).
I accept what Shell's outlook says; i.e. that we are in a 20-year transition period where many confusing choices will be thrown our way.
No worries. Saab drivers are clever enough to stay with the pack.
Maybe more clever. We hope the company goves us good choices with
heaps of integrity, just like the paint shop choice made for us.
