block the wheels, or use jack stands. These accidents almost always happen because we're in a hurry.
My wife worked with a man at GM who was involved in auto racing. I think his son drove, and he worked on the car. Anyway, one night before a race he was taking a wheel apart. They used the split rims that came apart when unbolted for ease of tire mounting. You just have to remember to fully deflate the tire before removing the bolts.
Probably never knew what hit him.
This fellow had mounted and dismounted tires that way hundreds, if not thousands of times. He was no doubt in a hurry to get ready for next day's race.
