I had an air powered chassis jack slip off the wnd of the chassis on a tandem axle Mack tractor. The back end of the tractor fell about 12" and the jack jumped about 12' in the air. The jack looked like this one, it's about 5' high when fully lowered.
I have a story similar to MitchN's about a spring brake. The parking brakes on tractors and trailers is actuated by a tapered spring that is about the size of a chevy front spring when uncompressed. In it's compressed state it is 5". There is a dual chamber, the service brake is applied by air pressure, the parking brake is released by air presssure. to replace the brake diaphragm you had to insert a caging bolt in the parking brake and compress the spring, I saw one come apart, it flew about 150'. fortunately there were no injuries.
