My fiance bought a 2002 VW Golf new from the dealer. The car has been good with no major problems except that it burns oil. Now I rarely drive the car and she drives it like a little old lady so the car has had no 'hard' mileage. When we took it in to the dealer they told us it was absorbing oil. You can imagine the explicatives that were flying through my head when they said this. Anyway, I logged onto http://www.vwvortex.com to ask the users in that site what they know about this. Apparently it's a problem that is known within Volkswagon Corporate with that engine, the same found in several of their models thourgh VW and Audi. Nonetheless, they offer no replacement or 'cure' unless you log the oil consumption, with them, every 1000 miles, for 1tens of thousands of miles. Now, I don't want to buy a new car only to have to take in in to a dealer every 1000 miles. I have a 22 year old Saab that doesn't require that. Even if the quality of VW's was slighlty above average and it certainly isn't, I wouldn't recommend one based on my experiences with dealers and VW corporate. Saturns aren't bad cars, but they need a makeover to address the younger crowds. They are so mid-90's looking.
My recommendation is the New Mazda 3. It has all of the same features and more than a Golf or Jetta, looks nicer and is built better. Besides, Jetta drivers are annoying IMO.
