I've owned 80 and 81 Scirocco S, both went over 150,000 with no major failings. My last car was a 1995 GTI-VR6, bought new in '95 (that was a leap of faith). Sold the car with 132,000 on it, including several track sessions and me lovingly beating the snot out of it every day, never broke. I'd say VWs from the late 80's and early 90's should be avoided, they were dark days for VW, I've always gotten the impression the cars from that time were built without much care or passion (except maybe GTIs and GLIs). An A3 jetta from 96-98 would probably be a safer bet.
