Here is my history with VWs:
1986 Quantum
1989 Jetta
1997 Jetta Trek
2004 Passat 1.8T
My father has had a:
1990 Jetta
1994 Jetta
1997 Passat
2000 Passat
Across all those VWs my family has not once had one serious issue with any of them. My 1989 and 1997 Jetta Trek were flawless. the 1989 went to 275K miles with only one clutch change and a water pump. The sunroof began to leak, but it wasn't factory. Sold to a guy for a winter car after 8 years of service. My 1997 Trek I bought with 4K miles on it and drove it to 55K miles and never once visited the dealer. My 2004 Passat has 18K miles on it not one trip to the dealer for anything yet. My parents VWs have had zero issues.
Good luck maybe...but doubtful. I stand as strongly behind the Saab brand as I do the VW. I am not sure what all the mechnical concerns are about VWs. If you don't take care of them they can have issues, just like any car. The only year I have heard that might be iffy for Jetta is 2000 when they went to the new body style. Usually the case for first model year cars. A 94 should be solid.
